To the highest heights of the universe, glory to God! And on earth, peace among all people who bring pleasure to God! Luke 2:14

The fourth Advent candle represents peace. Others call it the shepherd’s candle. This verse combines the two concepts beautifully.
When the angels first announced the birth of Jesus to the shepherds they declared peace for all those who bring pleasure to God. At the time of Jesus’ birth, shepherds were outcasts and were considered unclean. I love that God picked those others overlooked as the first ones to proclaim the good news that the Messiah had come. That certainly gives me a lot of hope!

Journal Prompts

Tell the story of a time when you needed peace and received it.

What was that process of restoration?

What difficult situations do you face right now?

How can peace begin with you in these circumstances?

Here is one of my favorite Christmas songs:

Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me.
Let there be peace on earth
The peace that was meant to be.
With God as our Father
Brothers all are we.
Let me walk with my brother
In perfect harmony.

Let peace begin with me
Let this be the moment now.
With every step I take
Let this be my solemn vow.
To take each moment
And live each moment
With peace eternally.
Let there be peace on earth,
And let it begin with me.

Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me.
Let there be peace on earth
The peace that was meant to be.
With God as our Father
Brothers all are we.
Let me walk with my brother
In perfect harmony.
Let peace begin with me
Let this be the moment now.
With every step I take
Let this be my solemn vow.
To take each moment
And live each moment
In peace eternally.
Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me.
